HoliDAILY Contest # 3: Win An Ecologie Shopping Bag

| November 30, 2008 10:00 AM | Posted in

From now until Dec. 31st, Kathryn and the gang at TBF will be giving away daily prizes to lucky TBF winners. Check back everyday at 9am to enter.

At midnight, one lucky TBF reader will win this prize, from Ecologie.

The Prize: Ecologie Shopping Bag in Fun Colors

Why you want this: It’s time to stop using the plastic grocery bags. Yeah, we know it’s hard when you have a bazillion things going through your head to remember to bring that recyclable bag with you to the grocery store. We forget ALL the time and those rough beige versions they have at the grocery store for like $10 isn’t our idea of “eco-chic”. Enter these bags from Ecologie, which come in a variety of super fun “eco-chic” colors.

To Enter this Contest, Tell Us Your Top Eco Secret in the Comment Section Below. We will select THREE (3) winners.

(actual bags may vary from those shown)

The Rules

- contest ends the day of the posting at 11:59pm

I walk almost everywhere I go.  Not only do I conserve gas, reduce pollution, and save money, but the exercise is great, it’s wonderful therapy, and the friendly people in my town waving at me always cheer me up if I need it!

I unplug my electronics at night—you don’t need them to be available to be “turned on”, and just having them plugged in drains extra electricity!

I found great clothes at the thrift shop. They fit, they’re soft, and just the other day, I found a Kenneth Cole blazer for $4.00.

I always unplug my computer when I’m not using it. This saves a lot of energy that’s being used for nothing.

I hit “enter” too fast….. before I entered my eco tip: save on electricity….. by using the newer versions energy-efficient light bulbs, and using candle light for mood lighting (which is super-chique, cozy, and saves money). The light bulbs save money, too, and while candles can still get expensive, stores like Ikea (regular prices) and Pier 1 (sales) have fantastic candles that last forever and look and smell heavenly without breaking the bank.

My top eco secret is to use food remnants I have from cooking (eggshells, herb stems, orange peels, tea leaves, etc.) and throw them in my garden. It’s great fertilization for the vegetables I grow in my garden (another eco secret) and reduces the amount of trash I have.

OK, so i turn off and unplug all my electronics at night, you dont need them waiting if you are asleep and it saves money and electricity. Another great thing you can do is carpool with people for rides to work, parties, stores, wherever! It saves a lot of gas and money and deveryone can chip in for the gas. The next way is to switch to CF lightbulbs, they save so much electricty!

Recently, I got some of my coworkers to start bringing tap water from home to drink instead of using so much bottled water at the office! I’m so proud of them!

I’ve eliminated the need for paper towels and paper napkins in my house by purchasing cloth ones.  I keep a stack of 10-15 clean towels in my kitchen and 10-15 clean towels in my bathroom.  When they get beat up or overly stained they become rags for scrubbing/washing up.  I’ve saved myself a significant amount of money and I’m not contributing more waste!

I drink water all day at the office, so I bought myself a Sigg aluminum bottle and carry it with me when traveling.  It has saved me a lot of money and it tastes better than water from a plastic bottle!

I only produce one small (grocery store sized bag) of garbage per week because of the following: I recycle (duh!), I buy fresh produce at the stand with no wrappers or bag, I don’t buy prepackaged foods, and I only buy bathroom products in recyclable containers.  I know you only wanted one secret, but I also recycle goods from the houses of people I know who don’t like to recycle, I use a big purse when shopping at the mall instead of taking their shopping bags, and I’ve boycotted buying flowers from anywhere besides a nursery because of the impact on the environment from the jets used to fly them to America daily (also another reason why I shop at produce stands from local farms).  I also started about a month ago to come up with one new way a week to reduce my carbon footprint.  And on the outside, I still look like a materialistic (but in actuality a budget) fashionista!
