H&M recently released pictures of items from it’s Spring/Summer 2007 line, which is pretty much everything you (or your mom) wore the summer of 1973. Some of the items, like the swing coat with the Peter Pan collar shown above is very cute. Other stuff, like the high waisted jeans, should have stayed in the 70s.

Yikes, I think that coat is one of the FEW good things. It looked very Un-H&M flipping through the collection. The high-waisted jeans are too high, did people forget how uncomfortable they are to wear? The tunic print is positively dreadful. And I can only imagine that some of these clothes looks even worse in person considering the materials used.
Those high-waisted jeans aren’t even flattering on the model—what are they going to look like on girls who are shorter than 5’11” and more than 100lbs? Disastrous!
The thing about retro/vintage clothes is that they have a certain element of character from the time in which they were made—60s sundresses are light and whimsical, girlish and innocent. 70s sweaters use bright colors and stripes and give off a sort of innate athleticism. But above all, the clothes don’t take themselves too seriously.
I think that’s where the H&M collection has failed—the ideas themselves aren’t bad, but the execution in color, fabric, even the expression and posture of the model wearing the clothes—it’s all taking itself so seriously.
Who’s going to wear short-shorts and a white button down shirt to the office? Context!
I loveeeee this coat. Wonder if it comes in other colors??? I also wonder if it is going to look good in person.
I guess that what I am starting to resent is that every season is a new change. But it’s always a throwback. So, out with color, in with black and white. Then, we’ll be back to pastels, then bright color again, then neon. Then it’s thin heels since we have done platforms. It never ends and it is all just a way to make everyone feel obsolete and unfashionable so we will have to keep buying. It’s all marketing. It annoys me!
Wow! Usually, I’m really jealous because we don’t have an H&M here in Seattle…but that collection is a different story! Not my favorite. However, I am kind of happy that higher waisted pants look like they’re coming back because I have a very long torso.
Can we not have a compromise on the jean waist height? I would CHERISH a pair of jeans that were flattering but didn’t show my ### crack when I sat down. I could start wearing some non-tunic-length tops with jeans again too.
All in all I thought the collection was okay. There were a few things in there that I would probably buy, provided they fit well… which is where H&M usually loses me.
Those high waisted jeans look like the same ones that were used on Saturday Night Live’s mom jeans skit.
