High vs. Low: Blush

A bit of blush can go a long way in giving you a fresh and pretty look. Makeup artists are always singing the praises of a good blush and the wonders it can do for one’s complexion. In fact, if you only have time to apply one item of makeup before heading out, blush is your best bet because it will simultaneously brighten up your face and add a touch of glamour. It’s universally agreed that blush is an essential product in any beauty bag, but why do some cost up to thirty bucks while others can be bought for a mere five?

Eager to find out I marched straight to the Lancome counter at Macy’s to test out the $29.50 Blush Subtil on my pale cheeks. I opted for a light pink color to give me a soft, rosy glow that wouldn’t look too harsh. Then I headed on over to my neighborhood drugstore for a taste of the other side of the spectrum. I picked out the Cover Girl Classic Color blush in a similar shade. So, which is which?

On the right: Lancome’s Blush Subtil in Rose Fresque, $29.50 available at lancome-usa.com. On the left: Cover Girl’s Classic Color Blush in Rose Silk, $5.50 available at covergirl.com.

After a grueling 16-hour day, I assessed the two different blushes on my cheeks. I still had the gently flushed glow of a cherub, and I had actually forgotten which cheek was which. Both brands had lasted all day and given me the glow I wanted. That’s when I decided I’d never spend $30 on blush ever again. Luckily, Cover Girl has quite an extensive variety of shades to keep me satisfied.

Blush, like eye shadow, lasts longer after application when it is more finely milled. The more expensive eye shadows and blushes are more finely milled. This makes the pricier blushes cheaper in the long run because they require less reapplication. It is also more convenient to only touch up lipstick during the day. The similar packaging between two blushes should not be a reason to choose one over another. In this case you get what you pay for.

the biggest difference i notice is that pricier makeup stays nicer longer. for someone who doesn’t wear makeup a lot, that ends up saving me money because i don’t have to buy new lipstick every time i want to wear it.

I got turned on to Lancome blush when I worked in a department store cosmetics department. I use “Shimmer Mandarin Sky”. It has a really subtle gold shimmer (i.e. not even a HINT of glitter, just a bit metallic) and it instantly wakes up my face like no other blush ever has. It lasts all day, even the shimmer. I guess it is all in finding the right shade for you, and if you can find cheaper blush that works, great. But the color alone is worth the money for me.
