Normally, we’re not entirely comfortable with wearing skirts that remind us of David Bowie or Billy Ray Cyrus in one of their more questionable hair moments. But we’re more than happy to make an exception this time for mullet skirts, a cute moniker for one of this season’s most surprising (but very welcome) trends.

High-low skirts (also called asymmetrical or waterfall skirts) are the great-great-great granddaughters of the Victorian-era “fishtail” hem styles. The skirts sport an uneven length, usually shorter in the front or at the side and longer in the back. In short, perfect for those who want to look sexy without flashing everything your momma gave you.

The business-meets-party hem trend came back in a very big way in spring and summer 2012, invading shops worldwide and getting photographed on stars like Nicole Richie, Kate Bosworth, Rihanna and in an odd twist of irony, Mr. Achy Breaky Heart’s daughter herself.

While we doubt that this trend will outlast LBDs, we get why these feminine pieces are getting serious attention at the moment. High-low skirts are ultra-versatile, day-to-night outfits. They can function as sexy summer skirts or sassy date-night skirts, depending on your shoes, accessories and top. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that these skirts also give an illusion of longer legs. Just make sure you pair ‘em with really fierce-looking shoes, since all eyes will be on your stems.
