The Challenge: Everyone’s lusting after cashmere this fall, and who can argue with that? Contrary to popular belief, however, you don’t have to spend a bundle to bundle up, fashionably. One of these sweaters is a fine example of as close-to-budget as decent cashmere typically gets (barring a great sale)—the other is a crime against bargain shoppers everywhere.
So, which is which?
The Answer: The sweater on the left is just under a grand ($995 to be exact), at Barney’s. The cardie to the right is just under a hundred ($99, natch) at Dillard’s, which suddenly seems positively cheap, doesn’t it?

LL Bean and Uniqlo make great low price (considering) cardigans!
I’ve heard a lot about not sacrificing quality when it comes to cashmere, but I would never ever spend half of what the Barney’s sweater costs. What can you say about finding “quality” cashmere? Thanks!
It does make me feel better about the $99 sweater when you see how expensive they can be elsewhere – good justification! Watch out for cashmere blends and if you’re looking for the good stuff ask for pashmina cashmere.
You get what you pay for with cashmere. I’ve ordered from Lands’ End and LLBean and been very satisfied – although the Lands’ End twinset was touted as “lightweight” and tends to pill a bit more, but a sweater stone takes care of that.
J Crew has great cashmere and it’s reasonable. I just purchased an boatneck ivory cashmere sweater for $99.
QVC has reasonably priced cashmere in their “Precious Fibers” collection, and even Old Navy is in the game this season. Check the website for great deals on cashmere!! Plus sizes, too!! I’ll take 10.
Occasionally I’ve seen them at Sam’s Club too for $39.
