Five Everyday Items for Gardening

A variety of everyday items can come in handy for gardening. It’s also a great way to reuse and repurpose items that might not be able to be recycled traditionally. Here are five of our favorites.

Egg cartons. Paperboard or Styrofoam, these make excellent seed-starting mini pots. Poke holes in the bottoms for drainage.

Milk jugs. These make great coverings to protect pansies, crocuses, and other early bloomers against frost in your gardens.

Juice cartons. These make great containers for starting plants as well. Just cut off the tapered tops so you have a tall, rectangular vessel for starting seeds or placing small seedlings to grow.

Newspapers. Just a couple days worth can serve your compost heap well. You can also make biodegradable pots with newspaper this handy little pot maker from Planet Natural, $16.95.

Popsicle sticks. These make good plant markers. Use a permanent marker to note the plant’s name, date a seed was started, etc.
