Thanks to Sarah Jessica Parker, Camilla Parker Bowles, and the late Isabella Blow, American Fashionistas now know about fascinators, the feather headdresses worn by fashionistas across the pond. This fall, feathers are showing up as embellishments on everything from handbags to t-shirts. Now, you have to be very careful when wearing this trend- as the eye will be drawn to where the feathers are located. So, for example, if you don’t like you shoulders don’t wear a tee with feather accents on the shoulder. However, a top with an all over feather print (like this one from Forever21), can help camouflage any issues.

Fashion has always been very cruel to the birds when it comes to taking their feathers. In the 1930s many women stopped wearing the feathers that were so popular in the twenties because they became aware of the cruelties involved in collecting the feather. For example, ostrich skin does not naturally have that pock marked affect you see on handbags. That pock marked affect comes from pulling the feathers out of the ostrich while it is alive and scaring it’s skin.
