What: The Amazonian supermodels of the 1990’s are back with a vengeance in major fall fashion ad campaigns. The return of models like Christy Turlington and Claudia Schiffer has been the talk of the fashion industry.
The Word: The supermodels of the 1990’s are celebrities in their own right, Karl Lagerfeld said in Woman’s Wear Daily. Although they’re all in their 30’s now, the same models who flaunted baby doll dresses in 1996 are the ones posing for Prada, Chanel, Escada, Louis Vuitton and Loewe today. Back then, we wore bicycle shorts as leggings and towering platforms instead of wedges, but the models we looked to then are the ones we still look to now. Donatella Versace stated,
“I don’t really make a distinction between working with celebrities and working with models as I think girls like Christy Turlington and, more recently, Kate Moss and Gisele [Bündchen] are celebrities, just as well-known as many actors and musicians.”
To be sure, they pick and choose the choiciest campaigns, putting their family and other aspects of their career first. American designers have been using celebrities though—Eva Mendes represents Calvin Klein.
What We Say: More power to them! It’s nice to see a 36 year old woman still being worshipped for her beauty. There’s something about the familiar faces of these supermodels that draws consumers willing to splurge on designer clothing. We somehow trust them—we’ve watched them grow and become mothers and wives (keeping their amazing bodies all the while) and still keep their relevance in the fashion industry. Let the actresses stick to the silver screen.
