Fashion for Moms: Look Sharp in No Time

Life as a mom is chaotic. Between childcare, household chores, and a career, many women neglect their own needs. Fashion is an outlet for creativity and expression, and the right ensemble does wonders for your self-confidence.

The trouble is, many moms are short on time, and this can translate into outfits that are simply thrown together. If you’re a crazy-busy mom, check out these fashion tips designed to save you time without sacrificing style. These fashion-specific strategies complement all the other non-fashion things you do to stay sane and looking sharp, like opting for mess free toddler activities.

1. Know your signature look

Every woman has her own personal style, whether it’s casual chic, smart and sophisticated, or modern bohemian. Once you’ve narrowed down your go-to look, you won’t have to spend so much time thinking about what you’ll be comfortable wearing that day.

2. Stock up on staple pieces

Staple pieces in your wardrobe include articles of clothing that are versatile enough to be mixed and matched with a number of other pieces. This allows you the opportunity to create a wide range of outfits using the same few pieces of clothing. Solid colored t-shirts, denim jeans, and neutral-colored jackets or blazers are standard staples that every busy mom should invest in.

3. Wear weather-friendly layers

As a busy mom, you don’t have time to run home to change your clothing when the temperature drops or your toddler spills juice on your blouse. Layers are your best friend, because you can quickly freshen your look by peeling off your outermost layer. As a general rule of thumb, stick with a cami or tank top with a t-shirt or blouse overtop. If the weather is cool, slip on a sweater, cardigan, blazer, or jacket.

4. Try skinny jeans

If you have yet to try skinny jeans, you don’t know what you’re missing. Not just for the younger generation, the right pair of skinny jeans can make women of all sizes and shapes appear shapely and feminine. Stay on the conservative side though. Don’t match your skinny jeans with a form-fitting top. Opt for a loose-fitting tee or tunic instead.

5. Choose shirtdresses as casual wear

When you need to be out the door in five, just slip on a comfy shirtdress and you’re ready to go. Shirtdresses are simple, yet stylish, and flatter most figures. To prevent a shirtdress from looking too frumpy, wear a belt around the smallest part of your waist to show off your feminine curves. Slip on a pair of ballet flats to complete the outfit.

6. Add a complementing accessory

The accessories you wear can instantly enhance even the plainest of outfits. Handbags, scarves, belts, and headpieces offer color, texture, and function. If you’re wearing solid colored clothing, a patterned clutch or sparkling headpiece can make the entire ensemble stand out as a whole. Jewelry is another popular way to improve nearly any look, casual or formal.

7. Opt for stylish, yet practical footwear

High heels may look appealing, but are certainly not practical when you have young children in tow. Busy moms require footwear that is comfy, practical, and stylish. Ballet flats, high-top sneakers, and wide-strapped sandals are suitable for the warmer seasons, while easy slip-on boots are excellent for colder temperatures.

I love the shirtdress idea. However, I am afraid I am a bit too big for the skinny jeans. One thing I have found that helps me find proper fits when ordering on line is women's size chart. I do have women in toe so I think your advice on high top sneakers or sandals is spot on.
