Tessa Asks: What’s the best colors to wear in an engagement photo?

Kathryn Answers: First, CONGRATS!! Blessings to you and your fiance

Now to business… Your best bet is to wear a sheath dress in a color, a la first lady Michelle Obama. For colors, think purple (which is a HOT color this season), blue, and green with the exact shade of the color reflecting your skin/hair color (deeper for pale skin/dark hair, brighter for darker skin/dark hair, softer for pale skin/light hair).

Some photo tips

- Keep hair simple and straight. Photos aren’t three dimensional- that perm/curly weave may be cute in person, but will look flat in a photo. bring mousse or gel with you to the photo shoot to smooth down any flyaways.
- Keep jewelry simple and non -reflective (except for your bling!). Pearls works well in engagement photos.
- Place you body at an angle. Here’s how to do it:
1. stand facing the camera,
2. slide your right foot slightly forward
3. turn your body away from the camera
4. place one hand on your hip (this may not be practical in your case)
5. turn your head towards the camera with a slight tip away from the camera.

As a photographer for engagement shoots, I disagree on a few points.  First, not all women can wear sheath dresses well.  The important thing for a garment worn in a shoot is fit - no pulling in the fabric, no gaps, no exposed bra straps when you’re not paying attention.

Secondly, with colors, avoid white, black, and if you’re shooting outside, green.  For outdoor shoots (which, if you’re lucky, will give you the most flattering light possible), look at warmer tones to contrast with the greenery around you.  Tangerine, red, burgundy, magenta, pink, plum, yellow - the goal is to give your photo a nice color palate range.

Also consider wearing clothes in your chosen wedding colors - if you send out engagement pictures with your invitations, they’ll complement each other nicely.

I agree with Hillary that fit is important and the style should be right for you.  Everyone should learn her or his most flattering colors and wear them. Those old formulas based on seasons or times of day are simplistic and don’t take into account changes in hair color. You are unique. My Custom Wardrobe book shows you how to find your best colors or I can help you via digital photos. Put dot com after my name and visit my site.—Barbara DesChamps
