What: A long way from Superhero duds status, this fall’s most striking outerwear silhouette for mere mortals is the cape.
What the fashion heads say: From InStyle’s fall preview: “With a formal shoulder line and coatlike silhouette, the new cape shape is far from costumey.”
What I say: Capes are another way to add elegance and a chic retro vibe to your fall wardrobe. That said, I’m not so sure about the practicality of it - there’s something to be said for sleeves when it comes to ease of movement and remaining tangle-free. It is striking though, especially with a pair of the season’s divine leather gloves and a great pair of jeans. This one’s on the verge of a splurge, at $148, but could be a good investment piece, if you love it. At Bloomingdale’s.

Three words: Impractical, awkward, costumey. Enough said!

Three years ago I bought a cashmere cape off of Ebay for about $25! I’ve always wanted one but didn’t want to look like I worked for the Salvation Army! I love wearing it in the fall because of the color and also because it’s perfect for that transition period - not too cold for heavy coats and not too warm to wear a light jacket. I can wear it with khakis or skirts and it looks great. I find it’s also good at hiding sling purses and very easy to access my transit pass of money without digging for things.
