By now we all know that the all-powerful color gods at Pantone (our dream job) have crowned “Radiant Orchid” as 2014’s Color of the Year, so it only stands to reason that the dreamy hue leads the lineup for Pantone’s top colors for Fall of 2014. Do we normally think of orchid for fall? Um, not really, which is why we love it so much – and it’s not the only departure from those ho-hum totally expected fall tones on the seasonal list.
Think “Mauve Mist”, “Bright Cobalt” and “Sangria” — who says your fall wardrobe has to match the fall foliage? We say stand out, and apparently Pantone has our back. For traditionalists, there are the slightly softer but still-expected “Aurora Red” and “Misted Yellow”, as well as a pretty almost-jewel-tone “Cypress” green.
But, as we also all know, color trends come and go, so how do we stay on-trend without having to reinvest in a whole new wardrobe every season (as if that were even a possibility on our budget)? If you’re a long-time TBF reader (love ya!), you probably already know the three-fold answer—shoes, accessories, outerwear. Think basic neutrals, with an orchid scarf and bright cobalt blue earrings—or basic neutrals with aurora red booties and a misted yellow clutch—or basic neutrals with a sangria cuff and Cypress belt … well, you get the idea. Want to go a little bigger? A colored cardigan or jacket is a relatively inexpensive way to boost an outfit with a blast of season-appropriate Pantone color.
