In the 1960′s, co-housing was a term used to describe a community for people who wanted to experience a more collective way of living. Now, according to a recent CNN.com article, co-housing communities are springing up all around the U.S. Their goal is now to live a sustainable life. Currently, there are over 150 eco-communities in the U.S. The communities are small so that neighbors can share things like lawnmowers to reduce the carbon footprint. The communities could be anywhere from a modern housing development to homier villages.
We had no idea that villages and eco-housing developments like these existed among us. The Nubanusit Neighborhood and Farm in New Hampshire is a wonderful example of an eco-community. The homes are heavily insulated, so that heat doesn’t escape or come in, reducing energy and money used on air conditioning and heat. We’re not sure we’ll be making the move since we’re pretty settled in our home already, but if we ever had to move, these eco-communities will be on the list of prospective neighborhoods.
