Attention White Ladies: STOP Washing Your Hair Every Day

Attention white ladies: If you haven’t heard by now, you shouldn’t be washing your hair every single day. Doing so rids the hair of its natural oils and can even irritate your scalp.

Got dandruff? Stop washing so much (and while you’re at it, cut the amount of shampoo you use down to half). Now, I’m not going to lie to you and say that my hair looks perfect on day three of no washing. Nope. Sometimes it looks downright scary. Washing my thick, coarse hair too early, though, isn’t an option for me.

Hair stylists typically say to go every other day without washing, or up to four days between washes depending on your hair type. For those in-between days when your mane needs a little pick-me-up, employ a dry shampoo.

It’s taken many years for companies to refine their dry-shampoo products. In fact, my mother tells me horror stories from years ago when she attempted to use dry shampoo, only to wander around looking like she’d popped on an 18th-century powdered wig. While many of today’s products don’t cut the mustard, a handful do a marvelous job of refreshing your ‘do. Today I’m reviewing three different products, all at different price points.

Dry Shampoo Products: A Review

Tresemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo, $4.48 from Wal-Mart
While I did not prefer this over the other two, I found it to have the nicest scent of the bunch. A little of this product goes a long way, so if you accidentally overspray, you’re left with a sort of sticky-meets-parched-looking coiffure. It can also leave some white debris if you spray too much. Tresemme’s Fresh Start Dry Shampoo gives hair a lift for a few hours but overall isn’t your best option when it comes to a dry shampoo.

(re)FRESH Dry Shampoo Flower Power, $8.29 from Sally Beauty
If you’re looking for a cost effective product that gets the job done, (re)FRESH is an excellent option. It comes in two scents, Flower Power and Clean Breeze. I’ve used both and find the scents equally pleasing, though Clean Breeze is a bit more mature. It sprays on evenly and does a great job of soaking up excess oil. I’d say it refreshes hair for a good four to six hours. If you spray too much, it can weigh hair down. The key is light application to only the roots.

Jonathan Green Rootine Dry Shampoo, $19 from Jonathan Product
I know this product is the most expensive of the three and that most would like me to say the others do an equally fine job, but Jonathan Green Rootine Dry Shampoo is simply unbeatable. While it looks far smaller than the other two, it actually lasts longer. It’s unscented and comes in powder form for both light and dark hair. Since you apply it directly to the roots, you don’t have to worry about the product coating the rest of your hair and weighing it down. It lifts the roots, soaks up excess oil, refreshes hair for a solid eight hours and is small enough to keep in your purse.

But this white lady's hair is thin and blonde!! By the morning of day 2 my hair is so limp and greasy I'm afraid I would have no friends if I didn't shower!

This white girl completely agrees! I absolutely do NOT wash my hair every day. I might rinse it through with cold water just to refresh the style, but shampoo goes on it twice a week at most. I don't use the dry shampoos. I am careful not to ever blast it with a hot hair dryer and I never use hot styling tools like a curling iron. I highlight it every few months and that's it. My hair never looks dried out or tired, always shiny and strong. For me it's actually easiest to style about day three without shampoo. I told some younger women recently I didn't wash my hair every day and they were horrified. Let's spread the word that this is so much better for your hair.

For the Jonathan Green stuff, do you just shake it onto your roots, or do you put it on your hand and rub it in? Always wondered the best application method for loose dry shampoo.
