DIY: Mosaic Picture Frames

Since deep blues are supposedly the look this year, get creative by incorporating them in your crafts. The Fanciful Pear (which is now no more) used to sell mosaic picture frames for $42. Or you can make your own. It’s a great way to repurpose and recycle broken china.

How to make mosaic picture frames

You will need to gather together your broken china. Or, if you never break your china (lucky you), go to a flea market, garage sale, or estate sale and get china plates on the cheap. Then bust them up into little pieces. It will help you with this craft, and it’s therapeutic to boot.

You also need an inexpensive wooden picture frame. Choose one with no grooves or designs. Also get yourself some paint, primer, hot glue, grout, and sandpaper.

  1. Lightly sand the frame, remembering to remove the glass and backing from the fame first.
  2. If you don’t plan on covering the entire frame, prime it and paint it. But you can skip this step if you plan on covering the entire frame.
  3. Then, take the pieces of china and glue them to the frame, making sure they fit together like a puzzle. Cover the whole frame, including the sides.
  4. Let the glue dry. Then grout.

Once you get the technique down, try it on a larger scale and make a tabletop.
