Remember a few years ago, when Kathryn wrote about the $10,000 Coach Bag?
Well….the economy is catching up to the struggling retailer and as a result, it will “add more collection and weight to the under-$300 price in order to gain share in a changed consumer marketplace.” So, while Coach purses may never be what we’d call cheap, some will be a little more affordable.
Will you respond to designer labels that cut prices by a hundred bucks, or will it take even more drastic measures to get your attention?

No, they will have to do better than that for me, in this current economic climate! True, to my budget fashionista title I cleaned up when coboutlet.com when offline this earlier this month. I purchased 9 linen blazers (6 for my mom, 3 for myself), 3 pair of linen pants, 4 dresses ( 1 linen), 4 metallic dressier tees and a 3/4 length white trench coat for $157.00 including S&H;. I am set for Spring/Summer,if only WINTER would exit left ALREADY, ugh! Although I did see a Tory Burchish tunic in this month’s O magazine designed by Dana Buchman that I think would look good on me. LOL! (She has a new line ready to hit Kohl’s in the next 6 to 8 weeks…very kewt!) I’ll have to wait and see the price point it’s offered at(hopefully better priced/better quality than Vera Wang), the discount available on it, etc. because it is definitely a want and not a NEED!
It would depend on the item. Under-$300 really isn’t too bad for a classic, well-made “investment” bag. But in Coach’s case, it would have to be something that wasn’t printed with the logo. I hate logo bags! IMO, at any price, all a logo says is that you can afford a brand, not that you have style! I’d rather carry a cute bag everyone knew was from Target than a boring, unimaginative logo bag!
I live in one of the four states with the highest unemployment. I did get a pink slip. I have to watch my pennies carefully now, esp. since I have always had a chronic medical problem. I must eat healthfully and am a food snob-meaning I have been cooking lots of organic at home lately. Coach was never my thing anyway. It seems California has been awash with a sea of women carrying Coach bags for too long. I grew tired of seeing Coach handbags about three years ago.
I don’t know—I have several Coach bags now, and I love them, but this is mostly thanks to my husband. He always finds them deeply discounted at our local Dillard’s. I have a white leather tote he bought me last year that I use daily and still love! I agree though that the overly logo-ed bags are a little old now, but Coach does have some nice pieces without the logo all over the place if you look right. Anyway, their attempt probably won’t really get me to buy any more than I (my husband) already do, because I just won’t buy one at full price. Maybe he’ll be able to get them at even better prices now though!
If I am going to purchase a Coach bag I spend time in their outlets. I have 2 Coach bags (none with Logo’s) that I have purchased for myself. None have been more than $150. When the outlets are running sales you can find that one good bag in their clearance section. Make sure you look on the bottom shelve in back of all the other bags…there’s always a hidden jem back there!
