Budget Food Tip: Steak Marinades and Rubs

Save money on bottled marinades or pre-mixed steak rubs by making them at home. Ingredients are basic, most of which you’ll have in the pantry already. Here are recipes for two steak treatments a garlicky basic marinade and a savory dry rub.

Basic Marinade
Combine:
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons minced garlic

To use: Spread on steak and refrigerate for at least an hour up to overnight, turning occasionally. Remove from fridge and let sit for 10 minutes to take the chill off. Cook steak on a medium heat grill pan or griddle, approximately 5 minutes each side.

Espresso Rub
Combine:
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon finely ground espresso beans or instant espresso
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper

To use: Rub on steak. Let sit for a few minutes, then cook steak on a medium heat grill pan or griddle, approximately 5 minutes each side.
