Trend Alert: Big, Big Hair

What: Retro hair for summer, a la “Hairspray“. Think volume and height, achieved with rollers, teasing, bobby pins and, yes, plenty of hairspray.

What the fashion heads say: This from “Summer’s most stylish movie is certain to turn heads, and so are the hairdos “We’re feeling big hair in a big way right now.”

What I say: Big hair is fine, as long as it’s not too big. Mile-high bouffants are fine for the big screen or celebrities like Amy Winehouse, but not so much for the rest of us. Instead, focus on soft, feminine curls, twists and ponytails, given a boost with a bit of extra height (for a tutorial on how to get the look, click here). And fortunately, hairspray is no longer just of the Aqua Net variety—use one that will keep your shape while maintaining a soft look and feel, like TRESemme ultra fine hairspray.

My main concern with the retro look is the content of the hairspray—the most effective stuff had lots of ozone depleting nastiness in it, not to mention long-term negative effects on your lungs. Are there more health-and-earth friendly products to use as equally effective alternatives nowadays?
