if you think something is on sale…ALWAYS ASK…sometimes they never mark it down on the actual merchandise.

2 liandxp October 7, 2009

I always try to pay with cash, which helps keep me from overspending.

3 dara22 October 7, 2009

Make sure you can think of the whole outfit when you buy an item—what will you where that item with, so it doesnt sit in the closet. If it needs a belt, scarf, shoe to pull it together then purchase that as well..

Know how to recognize a good deal.  If you don’t have a large budget, leave at some wiggle room for some unplanned spending. Purchase classic pieces when you find them at rock bottom prices.  At discount retailers you are not always going to find the specific item you have been wishing for like you would in a department store.  I’ve scored amazing deals (these are general estimates) $300 Laundry shirt dress for $30, $200 DKNY sheath dress for $14, and $350 Calvin Klein pencil skirt for $50 are just a few pieces I’ve bought in the past.  I will be wearing them all for years to come.

If there is something specific that you want, don’t buy it at the department store right away.  Can you wait until the off season?  If so it could go on sale or end up at a discount retailer.  Shop around and visit discount stores often, because the stock is always in a state of rotation.  Check prices online and utilize websites like thefind.com to track prices and ebay to score better deals online than in stores.

Always be on the lookout.  You never know when you will see your new favorite piece.  TJ Maxx is a great place for discovering unique finds.

6 nymdqueen34 October 7, 2009

Number 1 budget tip – go to the major retail stores, see what you want/like, then head over to your favorite TJMAXX or Marshalls get your search on for the same or similar item for less. Works just about everytime and your wallet will be greatful.

7 srujanar@yahoo.com October 7, 2009

Best place to get deals online and Factory outlets. I always make road trips to factory outrlet malls with friends and its loads of fun and big saving too!!

8 Turnbo October 7, 2009

My number one budget shopping tip: go shopping often in stores like TJMaxx and keep note on one pieces you like in the store. Go back every week to find other pieces and check to see if that item is on sale. Everything eventually goes on sale and you can used the money you saved to buy an item to go with your new purchase. Best way to get the most out of your money and build your wardrobe.

9 butlerss October 7, 2009

Shop at thrift stores like Goodwill and consignment shops. I have found the most beautiful, sometimes brand new things at those places. I will go there first before shopping traditional retail.

10 scout October 7, 2009

stick to a budget and buy on sale.

11 quietspirit October 7, 2009

Always know what you’re shopping for in advance. If you need to make a list and don’t deviate from it.

12 kathyo1999 October 7, 2009

Combine sales with coupons to maximize your discounts.  Also, if you are shopping online, join a rebate program (I use UPromise).

13 fashnblyl8 October 7, 2009

Don’t spend money on what you really don’t need. It makes it easier when you have a list.

14 deesher37 October 7, 2009

Pick quality over quantity, even on a budget.  Just because its on sale doesn’t mean you need to buy it.  Always keep in mind what flatters you, what you need, and where you will be wearing it!

15 Estasha October 7, 2009

Try not to splurge on basic or key pieces? Who needs a $150 white V neck tee when you can go to TJ Maxx or Target and get practically the same thing for under $10. Youre practically getting the same thing and will definately get your money’s worth by saving for that “WOW Factor” piece you will enjoy and cherish for a lifetime.

16 britne1 October 7, 2009

If you find an item you really want and it’s out of your budget, take some time and research. You can generally find the same item online (Ebay, store’s website, etc) or some coupons (retailmenot.com, etc) that can really bring the item down to fit your budget.

17 madharmonies October 7, 2009

Combine knockoff styles with the name brand recognizable pieces: TJ Maxx rain boots with Hunter liners, for example

18 Juliet October 7, 2009

Know what you have, and what you need.  Don’t fall for fads/just wear once pieces.

19 aighty22 October 7, 2009

My Budget Shopping tip: Coupons! Coupons! Coupons! Shop sales & combine with coupons to minimize spending and maximize purchases.

20 henhead7 October 7, 2009

eBay! I buy my designer jeans for 50-75% off on eBay. I just hunt for my size and watch the sales! And I use eBates whenever I shop online – the “big fat check” is always a happy surprise when it comes in the mail.

21 LoriT October 7, 2009

I’m a browser and like to stop in weekly just to check things out – gives me a lead on new items as they hit for the season!

22 ebony1 October 7, 2009

Number 1 Budget Shopping Tip: If you have any doubts about an item, just don’t buy it.

23 laneyk October 7, 2009

ALWAYS look for coupon codes online- You’ll find a deal.  Just recently I ordered from Dominos and got a free pizza, free Cinnastix, and two free 20 oz drinks- all I paid for was the first pizza!  That’s totally not fashion related, but I’m hungry : P
I shop with a list, bring clip coupons, browse sale fliers, bring limited amounts of cash.
The big one for me is that I ONLY buy it if I feel fantastic in it.  Even if I don’t think I’ll wear it all the time, as long as I feel like a million dollars in it, I know I’ll wear it.  That’s why I shop at TJ Maxx- I can buy those pieces that aren’t necessarily “everyday” without feeling guilty for breaking the bank- and I can stock up on all the essentials, too!

24 sohoaccessories October 7, 2009

I go to TJ or Marshall’s, look for what is needed but never turn my nose up at a good deal..Sometimes you have to buy when you see it to get the best deal I use my TJMaxx credit card that gives me rewards.

25 Vanillalotus October 7, 2009

Search on line for outfits that you like. Then go to the stores like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Kohls, JCPenny and create a budget for the outfit like max $80 for everything. This way you don’t get unnecessary pieces that you can’t pair up with anything in your closet. Make a time limit for your outfits, for instance on outfit a week or every two weeks. This so prevents splurging!

26 MsLNV October 7, 2009

I try to come with a specific item in mind and only shop for that thing. I also set a limit based on amount…for each $100 I want to spend I have to wait a day. This way, if I really want it, I’ll come back for it.  If it’s not there when I return, I say it wasn’t meant to be.

27 jtladybug02 October 7, 2009

Make friends with the sales people. They have the inside track of what new shipments come in and what day markdowns happen.Plus it’s always a good thing to have someone else’s opinion on things you try on!!

28 jngrl7 October 7, 2009

My budget shopping tip: Always go into the store with a budget in mind. For example, if you’re shopping for a new sweater, set a limit on how much to spend. Your next step? Head straight for the sale racks! And remember, the “compare to” price on the tags at TJ’s and Marshall’s are usually always lower than the MSRP…so you’re always getting a GREAT deal!

29 dani150 October 7, 2009

Have a list and a plan before you hit the store. Otherwise you can get distracted and tempted by all the beautiful things that a)you don’t need, b) you can’t afford or c)don’t go with what’s already in your closet.

30 ashearer22 October 7, 2009

Don’t buy something just because it’s on sale!

31 Serena October 7, 2009

Exercise self control.  If I see something I like, I will take the time to mull it over, even putting off purchasing it until a later time.  This has saved me many times from making impulse buys that eat away at my wallet and that later on, come back to haunt me, like, “What the heck was I thinking??”

32 adrian44 October 7, 2009

my tip would be to shop at the end of the season for the best deals

33 iowagirl301 October 7, 2009

Always check out the clearance racks against your other selections, more times than not I always find something adorable & end up taking home the sale item.

34 jazzyj October 7, 2009

Take note of the season’s vogue- trends- that peak your diva senses.  With those interests in mind, shop at “quality material at affordable prices” stores, like TJ Maxx, and begin focusing your fashion senses.  Buy few items at a time, of any combination of clothing, handbags, shoes, or jewelry, that match up nicely with your existing wardrobe.  Keep in mind the other fashion hot items that you noticed in the store.  Return as soon as your heart desires to repeat the process but make sensible limits of your total expenditure before your next paycheck ;-)

35 Toral October 7, 2009

Don’t spend too much on trendy items.. invest in a few classic pieces, and head over to TJ Maxx to get a great deal on pieces you will probably only wear for a season or two!

36 Joccy101 October 7, 2009

Always compare prices and know what the norm price-wise is for that item

37 saball1 October 7, 2009

Shop end of season for next year—but avoid trendy items.  These are definitely the best deals in both discount and department stores—and even online.  I tend to get the most compliments on items that I have purchased at the end of the season from one or even two years ago.
