Over Your Regular Beauty Routine? Me too! Summer Beauty Hacks You’ll Love

Given the state of the economy and the high likelihood that your job outlook might be shaky, now is not the time to drop big dollars on beauty products. You might even be tempted to dump your whole beauty routine — especially if you’ve been working from home and staying six feet away from your closest pals. And there’d be no shame in that. The usual summer beauty hacks lean towards minimalist, all-natural looks anyway.

Personally, I’m evolving my summer beauty routine with two goals in mind, to save money and time. I don’t know if current events have shifted my perspective or what, but I’m over the whole idea of being high-maintenance. Case in point: I haven’t gotten a haircut since February and I’m not bothered by it — sort of an embarrassing confession for someone who writes about beauty, right? I’m also watching my grey roots grow out and wondering when I’ll be disgusted with them.

Anyway, that’s the context for these summer beauty hacks. Save money, be genuinely you (roots and all!), and free up time to live your life with these five recommendations.

5 summer beauty hacks

1. Dry shampoo

Dry shampoo is intended for days when you don’t have time to wash your hair. But you can also use dry shampoo to add texture and volume to clean hair. Even the most affordable dry shampoo will help give your hair a lift and make it look like you just got a blowout from the salon. It also practically pays for itself by extending the time between regular shampoos. I only wash my hair a couple times a week, so my other shampoo lasts for ages.

Portable, lightweight, and budget-friendly, dry shampoo is my favorite summer beauty hack. I keep a small-ish bottle with me when I know I’ll be out all day. That way, I can spray the roots anytime I need some extra volume.

Why you need dry shampoo

Because dry shampoo can be a quick way to mimic a blowout when you’re short on time.

2. Sheet masks

Sheet masks are an affordable way to give yourself a little pampering. Who needs an expensive spa trip when there are thousands of face masks on the market that offer whatever help your skin needs? A salicylic charcoal mask, for example, can dry out blemishes and leave skin clear and glowing. And you can pick one up at Walgreen’s or Kohl’s for less than $5. That sure beats a $100-plus spa treatment.

Why you need sheet masks

Sheet masks are widely available at drug stores, in formulas tailored to address nearly any skin condition. And they’re super cheap.

3. Cheap CC cream

A good multipurpose product saves you time and money, and CC creams are among the best multipurpose beauty products around. Consider using CC cream for your face in lieu of moisturizer, concealer, serum, color corrector, and foundation.

CC cream will cover blemishes, even out skin tone, and protect your skin from harmful sunlight. Plus, depending on the formula you choose, your CC cream may also have skincare properties — with peptides, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid to keep your skin looking plump, hydrated, and youthful.

Why you need CC cream

CC cream is a must-have because it can replace four or five products you’re already using. Your wallet will thank you.

4. Coconut oil

I cook with coconut oil, so it’s readily available in my pantry. It’s an incredible versatile addition to your beauty routine, thanks to anti-oxidant, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial properties. You can use it as a moisturizer, gentle makeup remover, cuticle conditioner, or as a hair conditioner.

Why you need coconut oil

Well, you probably have it on hand already. If so, use it instead of more expensive moisturizers and hair smoothers.

5. Fur baby relaxer

This is my puppy. She’s four months old and kind of a terror.

I’m not the only person I know who came home with a puppy in the middle of quarantine. Furry friends make great company in the midst of crisis but — in my case anyway — those puppers can be huge sources of stress, too. If your pet is high strung like mine, you may have thought of using CBD for pets but wondered if it’s safe and effective. CBD can effectively calm down agitated, anxious, and poorly behaved pets. Just don’t try to feed the crazy puppy your CBD skincare, since that’s a different thing entirely.

Why you need a calmer puppy

In truth, I’m the one who needs a calmer puppy — because I can’t look beautiful naturally if I’m exhausted from constantly chasing the dog off the couch.

Budget summer beauty hacks

If there’s ever a time to ditch the mascara, liners, and lip colors, it’s summer. Streamline your beauty routine and go do something fun with the money and time you saved!
